Abstract

[Also in Divisions F4 and G1] Particulate material is heated or dried by the absorption of microwave energy while being passed down a vertical waveguide 1 in countercurrent to a heated pressurized air flow which maintains the material in a fluidized state. As shown in Fig. 3, microwaves from a generator 8 pass down the waveguide through the material and are mostly absorbed in a lossy load 30. A directional coupler 31 leads part of the microwave energy through a level set attenuator 33 to a crystal detector 34, the output of which controls the power output of the generator 8 or the temperature and/or humidity of the incoming air. Rejector means 14, 15 prevent leakage of microwave energy through openings 2 and 6. A vacuum extraction unit may be provided at the top of the waveguide to set up a forced circulation.
