Abstract
1,122,860. Liquefication of gases; refrigerating. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE D'ETUDES ET DE CONSTRUCTION TECHNIP S.A. 31 March, 1966 [31 March, 1965], No. 14249/66. Headings F4H and F4P. Compressed gas mixture, e.g. natural hydrocarbon gas, is cooled, liquefied and supercooled in the tube sides of series arranged heat exchangers 130, 132, 134, 136 traversed on their shell sides by downward counterflowing expanded liquid refrigerant undergoing revaporization and obtained by sequentially condensing t 103, 107, 111, 115 the several components of compressed refrigerant gas mixture discharged by a compressor 101, separating at 105, 109, 113 condensates L1, L2, L3, withdrawing L1, L2, L3 through ducts 126, 122, 117 expanding a portion of each condensate at valves 127, 124, 126 into the shell sides of condensers 107, 111, 115 to cool the tubes thereof to effect said sequential condensation of said refrigerant gas mixture, passing super-cooled condensate from condenser 115 through a duct 116, upwardly through tubes in heat exchangers 134, 136, an expansion valve 142, the shell side of heat exchanger 136, adding the remainder of condensate L3 after passage of the latter up tubes of exchanger 134 and expansion at a valve 146, passing the combined refrigerant streams down the shell side of exchanger 134, adding the remainder of condensate L2 after passage of the latter up tubes of exchanger 132 and expansion at a valve 150 and passing the combined refrigerant streams down the shell sides of exchangers 132, 130 back to the compressor inlet 152. Those portions of condensates L1, L2, L3 expanded into the shell sides of condensers 107, 111, 115 and vaporized therein are also returned to the refrigerant gas mixture compressor 101 through an inlet 128. Product liquid natural gas is expanded at a valve 138 into a duct 139 leading to a storage container. For liquefying natural methane a suitable refrigerant gas mixture comprises 0 to 3% nitrogen, 20 to 32% methane, 34 to 44% ethane, 12 to 20% propane, 8 to 15% butanes and 3 to 8% pentanes and heavier hydrocarbons.
