Abstract

1,119,533. Filter elements. E. I. VALYI. 22 June, 1965, No. 1612/68. Heading B1D. [Also in Divisions B3 and F4] A compound metal structure said to be capable of use as a component of a heat exchanger, gas diffuser, evaporator, fractionating column, filtering apparatus, and in chemical e.g. distilling apparatus, comprises a tubular porous body metallurgically bonded to a metal tube so shaped that fluid channels are defined between the body and the tube wall. The porous body may be located within and/or around the tube and may comprise a sintered mass of metal or metal oxide, carbide or nitride powder. As shown, channels 150 for one fluid are defined between one porous body 149 and a tube 147 which it surrounds; and other channels 152 for another fluid are defined between the tube inner surface and another porous body 151 within the tube. Channels 148 may be formed within the tube wall for a third fluid. Methods of making the structure are described (see Division B3) and in one form of structure (Fig. 6) the tube wall may have a longitudinal flute (154) therein to compensate for the dimensional changes said to take place between the tube and the porous body during manufacture.
