Abstract

<PICT:1119236/C1/1> Pickle liquor containing ferrous sulphate and free sulphuric acid is concentrated by adding strong sulphuric acid, projecting the combined stream transverse to an accelerated stream of hot gas to form fine liquid droplets of reduced water content, separating the gas stream from the liquid phase, collecting said liquid phase as a slurry of ferrous sulphate crystals in strong sulphuric acid solution, and recovering said crystals by filtration. The slurry may first be allowed to settle and the top (acid) layer recycled. In the figure, fresh pickle liquor stream 1 is added to recycle stream 2. Filtered acid may be added if required. The combined stream 7 passes into chamber 11 and flows down the walls 10. Hot gas enters via 13 and may be derived from combustion of natural gas, fuel oil or residual heavy oil. The temperature of the gas may be 800 to 2300 DEG C. The vapour passes out through 17 while the slurry is allowed to settle in vessel 19. Recycled sulphuric acid leaves through 21 and slurry through 23. The slurry is filtered at 24.
