Abstract
The invention comprises steroido-oxazolines of the formula <FORM:1119082/C2/1> wherein X represents a halogen atom, R represents hydrogen or a hydroxy or acyloxy group and R1 represents hydrogen, an alkyl group having up to eight carbon atoms or a phenyl group and a process for the production of a 9a -halo-11b -hydroxy-[17a , 16a -d]-oxazoline steroid of the pregnane series which comprises subjecting a corresponding pregn- 9 (11)-ene-[17a , 16a -d] -oxazoline steroid to halohydroxylation to introduce a 9a -halogen atom and an 11b -hydroxy group or by cle*?*ving the epoxy group of a corresponding [17a , 16a -d]-oxazoline of the pregnane series with a hydrohalogenating agent. Halohydroxylation may be effected by means of an N-haloamide of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or an N-haloimide of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid followed by a hydroxylating agent such as perchloric acid. The 9b , 11b -epoxide may be obtained by epoxidation of a corresponding 9a -halo-11b -hydroxy-compound by reaction with a base. Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-inflammatory properties comprise the above compounds and a pharmaceutical carrier.
