Abstract
1,118,748. Stacking and unstacking machines; grippers for stacking containers. KUMAG A.G., and HOLSTEIN & KAPPERT MASCHINENFABRIK PHOENIX G.m.b.H. 29 July, 1965 [3 Aug., 1964], No. 32396/65. Headings B8C and B8H. In a device for stacking and unstacking opentopped containers, e.g. crates, metal tanks, cylindrical buckets &c., a number of pairs of downwardly opening jaws 5, Fig. 1, are arranged on a beam 1, each pair arranged to grip two adjacent containers 14 across their contiguous side walls 16. In one embodiment, four pairs of self-closing jaws 5 are arranged on a beam 1, Figs. 1, 2 (latter not shown), to pick up six crates 14, Fig. 5 (not shown), each jaw having a projection 15 which engages in the handle hole of the crate. The beam 1 may be guided along a vertical track for raising and lowering the crates by rope pulleys 3. As the device is raised the jaws 5 automatically close on the side walls 16 of the crates and when the crates have been deposited, e.g. on another layer of crates or on a pallet, the jaws are opened by operation of pressure cylinders and pistons 12. The jaws and beam may also be moved horizontally, if, e.g., the pulleys 3 form part of a travelling electric crane, or the beam 1 runs on horizontal rails. In a modification, a beam (17), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), carries three pairs of jaws (18), for stacking layers of six crates (23) on a pallet (24), the beam being movable in vertical tracks (19) by a chain (20) and sprockets (21). In both embodiments, the beam 1, (17) may be held fixed, the stacking pallet and stacked crates being lifted up to the jaws. Alternatively, they may be provided with horizontal motion, a hoist at one end of the horizontal motion lifting a layer of crates up to the jaws, and a second hoist lifting the pallet to the level of the jaws at the other end of the horizontal motion.
