Abstract

Synthetic magnesium silicate (forsterite) is made by heating magnesium oxide and silica to 1200 DEG C. together with up to 5 wt. per cent boric oxide. The silicate is used as an insulating layer in a thermoelectric device (see Division H1) and the boric acid is added to make the sintering temperature of the silicate compatible with that of the thermoelectric element.
