Abstract

1,117,570. Coaxial connectors; plugboards. AMP Inc. 29 Nov., 1966 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 53368/66. Heading H2E. A coaxial connector is located in a plugboard 10 (Fig. 3, not shown), by two oppositely directed C-shaped spring members 40c engaging the inner surface of an aperture (11) and is prevented from being pushed further into the plugboard by a ring corrugation 40b. The outer conducting sleeve (40) of the connector is electrically and mechanically connected to the screening braid 16 of the coaxial cable 14 by a crimped ferrule assembly comprising a rigid support ferrule 44 inserted between the inner insulation 18 of the cable 14 and the screening braid 16 to protect the inner insulation against crimping, a retaining ferrule 42 to secure the braid 16 to the ferrule 44, and an outer ferrule 60 to secure the outer conducting sleeve (40) to the ferrule 42. The contact pin 50 is connected to the inner conductor 20 (Fig. 5, not shown), of the cable 14 by crimping as at 50b, and is spaced from the outer conducting sleeve (40) by a dielectric insert 34 having a forward portion of reduced dimensions 34c to accommodate flexing of the spring members 40c. A dielectric spacer 36 prevents contact between the flanged end 44a of ferrule 44 and the rearward end of contact pin 50. Withdrawal of contact pin 50 in the axially forward direction is prevented by a flare 50f abutting against a shoulder transition region on the internal bore of insert 34. Relative rotation of contact pin 50 and insert 34 is prevented by a dimple 50c on the contact pin 50, which engages the insert 34.
