Abstract

1,110,075. Air cushion vehicles; inflatable catamaran craft. BRITISH HOVERCRAFT CORPORATION. 8 Nov., 1966 [18 Nov., 1965], No. 49114/65. Headings B7A and B7K. An air cushion vehicle, which may be operated also as a displacement vessel, has at each side a flexible inflatable wall or skirt 2 inflated through a duct 4 in the body 1 and externally of the skirt, an inflatable buoyancy member 3. When the vehicle operates as an air cushion vehicle the member 3 is partially retracted by cables 5 operating over pulleys 6 and held against the inflated skirt by the application of suction through a duct 8. In the displacement vessel mode cables 5 are extended and pressure air is delivered through duct 8 to inflate the buoyancy member to the configuration shown in Fig. 2. To contain the cushion in the air cushion vehicle mode a forward inflatable transverse diaphragm is provided to be extended against the resistance cables and air springs (Fig. 4, not shown) and an aft inflatable transverse barrier which is urged against cushion pressure by an inflatable chamber (Fig. 5, not shown).
