Abstract
1,104,638. Bunghole bushes; tapping barrels &c. P. B. BUCKLEY. 7 Feb., 1967 [21 March, 1966], No. 12416/66. Heading B8T. A plastics bung for barrels &c. has a tapered tubular part 3 with an integral end wall 5 which has a central weak spot 8 formed by reducing the thickness of the wall. When a tubular plug or hollow tapping connector (6), Fig. 2 (not shown), is, e.g., screwed or pushed into the tubular part 3, it ruptures the end wall 5 starting at the central weakened portion 8, but the pieces of the wall are still attached to the tubular part and bend back to form a seal against the end of the plug &c. The weakening of the wall 5 may be achieved by making either or both surfaces spherically or conically or cylindrically concave, Figs. 3-10 (not shown), or by using two perpendicular grooves (14), Fig. 12 (not shown), across the wall 5. The rupturing may be aided by arranging for the plug &c. (6) to exert radial pressure on the tube 3 so that the end wall 5 is under stress when the plug &c. contacts it.
