Abstract

1,103,926. Coating apparatus. E. Z. PAINTR CORPORATION. 2 Dec., 1965 [3 Dec., 1964], No. 51188/65. Heading B2L. [Also in Division A4] A method of applying fibres to a base to form a paint applicator comprises causing relative movement between the base and the fibres, and establishing an electrostatic field to attract the fibres to the base, the field and the relative movement being such that a major portion of the fibres approach the base surface at an acute angle and with the same orientation relative thereto, and securing the fibres to the base surface to retain the fibres in their approach angle and orientation. The base is preferably in the form of a cylindrical paint roller sleeve having an adhesive outer surface and in the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 fibres are allowed to fall from a flock sifter 18 past a cylindrical base 11 mounted on a rotating conductive spindle 15 located between conductive electrode panels 16, 17. The spindle 15 is connected with one terminal of power supply 21 the other terminal of which is earthed as are the panels 16, 17 and the sifter 18. The fibres aquire a charge and are attracted to the base 11, which has a coating of adhesive such that the ends of the fibres become embedded therein. In another arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown) the base member 32 is mounted vertically and the fibres are allowed to fall past the surface thereof. In a further arrangement (Fig. 6, not shown) the fibres are dropped on to an endless conveyor belt 56 and are attracted upwards by the base member 57. The fibres are preferably of a synthetic plastics material such as Nylon.
