Abstract
A long cast ingot of refractory material is formed from granular material by zone-melting. After charging, the material is passed through successive electric heating, atmospheric cooling and annealing stages to produce an ingot surrounded at the sides and from below by granular material. A long trough (1) is passed progressively below a feed funnel (7); a gauge (8) for producing a concave or inverted W cross-section; heating electrodes (9); and then, after passing through an atmospheric solidification zone (VI), below a feed funnel (12) for feeding granular refractory material on to the solidified material to effect annealing.
