A radiant convecter gas fire comprises a casing 10 having ceramic radiants 13 behind a front aperture 12 above a burner bar 14, the combustion gases from which pass upwardly through a primary heat exchanger 16. A second burner bar 21 is mounted in the bottom of a convecter heat exchanger 20 spacedly mounted behind the primary heat exchanger 16 to which it is connected by a pipe 24 and the exchanger 20 is, in turn, connected by pipes 25 to a secondary heat exchange 22 spacedly mounted therebehind so that the gas from the exchangers 16, 20 passes into the upper end of the exchanger 22 for downward passage to an exhaust aperture 35. A tangential fan or impeller unit 27 draws air from a lower air inlet aperture and passes it through the gaps between exchangers 16, 20, exchangers 20, 22 and exchanger 22 and rear wall 23 of the casing to a warm air outlet 30 in the top wall of the casing. Air also passes upwardly from the aperture 12 in the front wall of the casing over the front face of the exchanger 16 to the outlet 30. A thermostat 37 is mounted on the exchanger 20 to be responsive to the temperature of the air flowing thereover so as to initiate and terminate operation of the impeller when a predetermined value is attained.
