Abstract

1,196,833. Coated leather. CENTRE TECHNIQUE DU CUIR. 20 March, 1968 [31 May, 1967], No. 13428/68. Heading B2E. The surface of leather or leather substitute is temporarily protected against damage in the course of its fabrication into an article by coating the surface with a liquid .which forms upon drying a supple, elastic skin that adheres to the surface during fabrication and is capable of being readily peeled from the surface after fabrication. The covering may be applied by spraying, flowing and may be opaque or transparent. A composition used for the formation of the temporary protecting skin comprises a liquid vehicle, a mixture of polymers and copolymers of film-forming synthetic resins, a filler, thickener, stabiliser, a spreading agent and a pigment. The skin may be applied in a plurality of layers, with drying during successive applications. The substrate may be pre-treated with a wax composition comprising a mineral pigment, emulsions of natural and synthetic waxes, thickener, vehicle, In an example morocco leather articles of box calf were treated by spraying in two passages with a composition comprising (parts by weight) up to ten parts pigment, twenty parts wax emulsion, 0.5 parts thickener, 69.5-79.5 water. A composition comprising 100 parts of a mixture of resins consisting of polymers and copolymers of film-forming acrylic resins and polymers and copolymers of film-forming vinylic resins, up to one part colloidal kaolin, up to one part styrene copolymers with carboxyl radicals, two parts glycols, two parts polyacrylic derivatives as thickener, up to ten parts mineral pigment, ten parts water was then applied.
