Abstract
1,196,115. Mechanical switches without quick-action. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 8 Sept., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966], No. 40735/66. Heading H1N. On rotation of a transparent cap 10, through a shaft 8, gears (7) and a motor 6, a cam 11 thereon sequentially depresses projecting pins 3 of switches mounted in a fixed insulating annular body 2 so that the pins 3 will project from the inner surface 4 thereof. Such operation of a switch causes a resistor to be switched into a bridge circuit and if its value is too large it is switched out and the rest lower valve resistor in sequence is tried when the next pin 3 is operated. For resistances that are too large, a pulse is delivered to a solenoid 9 which attracts a lever 14 hinged on a member 13 on cap 10, so as to bring said lever 14 into the plane of pins 3, and during rotation of cap 10 lever 14 depresses the pins 3 projecting from the inner surface 4 to sequentially release the switches. A wiper contact 16 on cap 10 sweeps long and short contacts 17, 18 and a continuous contact 19, short contacts 18 being connected to a pulse generator and contact 19 to a magnetic tape recorder. When a switch is operated its long contact is connected through circuitry to its short contact and thus to the pulse generator. When a switch is released, the connection between the long contact and pulse generator is broken. As the contacts are wiped, one pulse is recorded for each switch. If a switch is operated and released before the next switch operated, a short pulse is recorded since it is applied via the short contact for a short while. If the switch is not released before the next one is operated, a long pulse is recorded since it is applied via the long contact for a longer while. At the end of a sequence, the solenoid is operated to reset all the switches. The operational positions of the switches may be recorded in binary code.
