Abstract
1,196,184. Extracting iron. J. C. I. METAL HOLDINGS PROPRIETARY Ltd. Feb. 4, 1969 [Feb. 6, 1968], No. 5825/68. Heading C7D. [Also in Division F4] Pellets of finely-divided iron ore and carbonaceous reducing agent have mixed with them granular carbonaceous material of smaller particle size than the pellets and are then heated in a shaft kiln so that the pellets are at least 90% reduced; at the bottom of the shaft the mixture passes over a discharge edge to a screen out of contact with the air, where the carbonaceous material is separated from the reduced pellets, the latter passing to a furnace containing a bath of steel where they are melted while the former is cooled to below combustion temperature and recycled. By removing carbon from the mixture in this way steel may be directly produced in the melting furnace without the necessity of a conversion operation. As illustrated, moist pellets from hopper 23 are dried and pre-heated by hot gases while travelling on conveyer 23 to hopper 14, where they are mixed with granular carbonaceous material which may have been recycled through line 26 and possibly with fluxes. Hopper 14 discharges into shaft 10 where the charge is heated by hot gases from burner 12, before being discharged by reciprocating plate 15 to screen 19, the hot pellets passing to insulated hopper 30 and the carbonaceous material to sprays 32 and magnetic separator 33. Air may be introduced at 18 to burn a part of the carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the ascending gases.
