Abstract

1,194,723. Curing resins containing vinyl unsaturation. TRW Inc. 3 Aug., 1967 [4 Aug., 1966], No. 35781/67. Addition to 1,193,301. Headings C3P and C3R. A polydiene-polyether copolymeric resin is made by forming a mixture of a polyfunctional polydiene prepolymer having at least 50% of its olefinic unsaturation in the form of pendant vinyl groups on alternate carbon atoms of an elongate backbone carbon chain, long-chain polyfunctional polyether prepolymer, a polyfunctional organic chain extender capable of reacting with the functional groups of the polydiene and the polyether prepolymers, and a peroxide-free radical initiator capable of promoting the cyclization of the pendant vinyl groups and cross-linking of adjacent chains, and reacting the mixture to produce an elastomeric copolymer. The copolymer can be cured merely by the application of heat to cyclize the pendant vinyl groups. A suitable composition comprises 1,2-polybutadiene diol, polyoxypropylene triol, ditertiarybutyl peroxide, and either toluene diisocyanate or ditolylene diisocyanate. If desired the thermoset resin can be produced in a single step by heating the mixture.
