Abstract
1,194,618. Lifts with hoist cables of adjustable length. OTIS ELEVATOR CO. 23 Dec., 1968 [10 Jan., 1968], No. 61123/68. Heading B8L. When it is necessary during building construction to increase the height of operation of a lift, longer hoist cables are required. Spare cables for this purpose is stored on reels 49, Fig. 1, on top of the car 44 and the cable in use passes round a fixed sheave 45 and is clamped in cable clamps 47. Clamps 83, 84, Fig. 3, are also provided on the sheave. When the lift is to be raised the upper beam 48, Fig. 1, of the car is connected to the machine room by chain hoists 53, 54, the car is raised until the hoist ropes slacken and the counterweight is disconnected. The machine room and car are now raised by the erectors hoist 39 and beams 24, 25 are withdrawn from under the bedplate 23 using clamping plates 88, 89, Fig. 4, as guides. The machine room is raised to the new level and a duplicate set of beams 24, 25 are inserted through the guide clamps, the machine room is lowered on to the beams and the hoist 39 is detached. An auxiliary line is attached to the hoist cables on the counterweight side and after slackening the cable clamps 47, 83, 84 cable is paid out to the counterweight from the storage reels 49. The cables are attached to the counterweight, the clamps are retightened and the car is lowered slightly by the chain hoists 53, 54 to take the slack out of the cables. A similar method of raising the machine room and car with a 2: 1 roping system is described with reference to Figs. 11, 12 (not shown). Cable storage is on top of the car, as previously described.
