Abstract

1,193,269. Anti-skid braking systems for road vehicles. ROOTES MOTORS Ltd. 25 Aug., 1967 [31 Aug., 1966], No.38900/66. Headng F2F. A road vehicle braking system which prevents skidding when brakes are applied too severely, incorporates at least one brake pressure releasing device responsive to the rate of deceleration of the front wheels. The deceleration sensing and pressure releasing device is illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). In an embodiment Fig. 1, pressurized fluid from a master cylinder 64 is fed via a servo operated valve in the deceleration responsive device 67 to a front wheel brake 60 and rear wheel brake 62, and via a similar device 68 to front wheel brake 61 and rear wheel brake 63. Pulleys 10 of the devices are coupled to the respective front wheel. If say front wheel 60 decelerates too quickly a flywheel in the device 67 overruns the pulley to open a valve (27) (Fig. 3, not shown) admitting air to the servo unit which shuts a ball valve (48) in the fluid pressure line to the associated front and rear brakes, by pressing down on a spring loaded piston of the servo. The piston, via a push rod normally holds the ball valve open. The push rod is slidable in a cylindrical chamber communicating with the fluid lines to the brakes so that as the push rod moves to its valve release position brake fluid is free to occupy the vacated volume in the cylinder and thereby the fluid pressure is reduced. In this embodiment braking pressure can be applied to an outer front wheel on a corner, even if the inner front wheel has little adhesion. Alternatively as shown Fig. 2, brakes on diagonally opposite wheels are connected to one fluid pressure line. Furthermore there may be two master cylinders, one to each fluid pressure line. The front to rear brake pressures may be in a ratio 70: 30 or 75: 25. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 962,933.
