Abstract

1,192,919. Pre-combustion chambers. PERKINS ENGINES Ltd. Aug. 2, 1967 [Aug. 11, 1966], No. 35940/66. Heading F1B. A flame cup 13 forming part of a compression ignition I. C. engine pre-combustion chamber 11 has a floor 18 and a continuously upstanding wall 22, an inlet aperture 15 in the floor and an adjoining outlet aperture 16 in the wall, the floor having a channel portion 20 inclined towards the outlet aperture and which terminates in a vertical edge 19 defining the inlet aperture. During the compression stroke air directed upwards through aperture 15 follows the arrows and after fuel injection and ignition the partly burnt mixture is directed through aperture 16 and along a cylinder head groove 17. In alternative embodiments the area of aperture 15 is related to the smoke emission, power output and torque requirements at high or low engine speed ranges.
