Abstract
1,191,981. Controlled reduction of Ti solutions. TITAN G.m.b.H. 9 Jan., 1968 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 1332/68. Headings C1A and C1N. A process for controlling the continuous reduction of solutions containing Ti and Fe salts, obtained by decomposing Ti ores, ore concentrates, and slags with acids, prior to hydrolysis to form TiO 2 , comprises measuring the redox potential of the solution and controlling the amount of the solution passed through a reducing apparatus accordingly. The reduction of Fe<SP>3+</SP> to Fe<SP>2+</SP> and some Ti<SP>4+</SP> to Ti<SP>3+</SP> is effected, and the redox potential measures the content of Ti<SP>3+</SP> ions. Scrap iron or electrolysis may be used. The redox measuring system may comprise a Pt electrode dipping into the final solution, combined with a reference electrode or with another Pt electrode dipping into the initial solution. The decomposition acid may be H 2 SO 4 or HCl.
