Abstract

1,190,248. Upward flow bed filters. V. J. G. HARDING. I Dec., 1967 [4 Jan., 1967; 31 July, 1967], No. 54903/67. Headings B1D and B1T. An upward flow filter comprises a bed of particulate material of height H when quiescent, a retainer screen 2 defining the top of the filter chamber, (a) valve-controlled inlet(s) R, W for raw fluid and wash fluid, a filtrate outlet F above screen 2, and a valve-controlled wash fluid outlet W' opening into the chamber at 4 at a height # 1.5H but below the screen 2. As described, raw fluid forced in at R raises part of the bed and compacts it as at B against screen 2; this forms the filter element. After filtration, layer B collapses on removing the pressure; this may be assisted by fluid jets (not shown) and fluid from these jets leaves through conduit 5. Wash fluid is then introduced at W, which fluidises the bed to a height of about 1.5H Fig. 1 (not shown), and ultrasonic agitation may be used; thus dirty fluid is expelled and this washing cycle is repeated 8 or 10 times to clean the filter bed. Simultaneously, auxiliary cleaning fluid may be flushed down through screen 2. A supporting screen 3, similar to 2, may be provided. Applications relate to filtering liquids or gases; in the latter case the medium used may be sawdust or plastics particles.
