Abstract
1,185,831. Spark erosion; making electrodes. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 5 April, 1967 [5 Jan., 1966], No. 490/66. Headings B3A and B3V. In a spark erosion process the electrode tool has a working surface formed by electrode position of a metallic skin upon a metal mandrel. The tool F may be of stainless steel and after degreasing and cleaning, is provided with a deposit of copper by rotating it within a bath 9 of electrolyte consisting of CuSO 4 and H 2 SO 4 . The bath contains main anode 13, subsidiary anode 15 and a shield 17 of polymethyl methacrylate. During use in a spark erosion process, the copper deposit (21) itself is eroded, Fig. 3 (not shown). This deposit may be removed with nitric acid and replaced by a new deposit. The tool F has holes (7) Fig. 4 (not shown), for the working fluid and a tube (5) through which the eroded debris may be removed by suction. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the tool comprises a mandrel 43 provided with an internal deposited layer 51 of copper. In use the layer is moved forwardly of the mandrel, after heating in water, by means of a threaded nut 57 to provide an annular trepanning surface. In another embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the deposited layer is provided on the outer surface of the mandrel.
