Abstract

1,184,480. Drilling machines. A-1 BIT & TOOL CO. 18 Dec., 1967, No. 57392/67. Heading B3C. When an off-shore drilling operation is completed, the telescoped well casings 20, 22, 24 are parted off by a cutter head 34, Fig. 3, and removed from the well. Head 34 comprises a number of replaceable cutters 52, pivoted on a body 38 connected to a drill string 16, by a sub 36, and a hydraulic piston 40 in the body co-operates with the cutters so as to pivot them into the horizontal cutting position against the action of a spring 48. In operation, the drill string is passed into the inner casing 20 until a swivel assembly 30 rests on the casing shoulder 32, Fig. 1. Piston 40 is actuated, so that cutters engage the wall of casing 20, the drill is rotated, and casing 20 is parted off. The drill string is removed from the casing, sub 36 is replaced by a shorter sub, cutters 52 are replaced by longer cutters and the operation is repeated, so that the cutters pass through the groove previously produced in casing 20, and part off casing 22. The same procedure is carried out for parting off casing 24, the drill string is retracted, and the casings are removed.
