Abstract
1,182,560. Electric couplings. LUCIEN FERRAZ & CIE. 27 Sept., 1968 [4 Oct., 1967], No. 45907/68. Heading H2E. Passage of current through the axle bearing 2 of an electric railway vehicle is prevented by a short-circuit between the axle 1 and axle box 3 by means of non-rotating brush contacts 12 bearing against an axle end plate 8. Three brushes 12 are disposed symmetrically about the central axis in rectangular bores 10b, which connect with an axial bore 10c of hexagonal lateral cross-section, in a cylindrical support body 10. The support body 10 is mounted on, and electrically connected to, the axle box 3 by means of an annular cover 6. The outer, sloping face of each brush 12 has a metallic covering 13 and an integral projecting tongue 13a which may slide in a slot 10d of the bore 10b to limit displacement of the brush towards the axle end. The brushes are urged against the plate 8, which may be of bronze, by coiled spring strips 18a, the ends 18 of which are secured to an extension 16a of an end cover 16 by means of rivets 19. The axial extension 16a is of hexagonal lateral crosssection and is disposed within the central bore 10c of member 10 so that the coiled spring portions 18a project through the connecting slots into the bores 10b. Conductive braiding 14 is connected to the member 10 by terminal 15 and completes the circuit from the plate 8, through the brushes, to the axle box 3. Seals 6a are provided between the axle end cap 4 and cover 6. Brush wear may be measured without removing the end cover 16 by inserting a graduated rod through a bore in boss 16b on the end cover 16 until it abuts the oblique face 13 of the brush.
