Abstract

1,182,062. Electrolyzing water. SIMON-CARVES Ltd. Jan.31, 1969 [March 19, 1968], No.13144/68. Heading C7B. Small controlled quantities of steam are generated by electrolyzing water by a controlled electric current to generate H 2 and O 2 which are subsequently recombined by a heated catalyst to form steam. The electrolysis cell 10 may have Pt electrodes 12 immersed in ionizable water 13 e.g. N/10H 2 SO 4 , a carrier gas inlet 14 e.g. for introducing a N 2 stream, and may be surrounded by an ice bath 11. The H 2 and O 2 generated may pass in the N 2 stream through a drier 15 containing magnesium perchlorate before entering the recombination chamber 16 containing the catalyst e.g. platinized asbestos heated by an electric heater 17. Flame traps 18 may be provided at both ends of the chamber 16.
