Abstract

Framework; planes, construction of.-Spars, girders, struts, &c. for aircraft and other light structures are composed of outer longitudinal members connected together and to one or more intermediate tubular members or cores by series of transverse members. Fig. 1 shows upper and lower channels a connected to a tube b bv transverse members c comprising tubes with splayed ends. The tubes c are passed through holes in the tube b and secured thereto; or the tube b may pass through the tubes c. Fig. 3 shows another form having two tubes b<1>, b<2> connected by short lengths of rectangular tubing g to the members a, which are composed of angle-members with their flanges f placed together. In another form, the transverse members comprise flanged plates set obliquely. Fig. 6 shows a method of jointing together a spar and web by means of plates j. The outer members a may be constituted by a tubular structure surrounding the core b, and the tubes b may be ribbed.
