Abstract

1,177,224. Golf bails. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 21 July, 1967 [22 July, 1966; 7 March, 1957], Nos. 32952/66 and 10734/67. Heading A6D. [Also in Division C3] One-piece playballs or cores therefor, particularly golf balls, comprise a blend of a rubber and a thermoplastic crystalline homopolymer or copolymer of an alpha-olefin, the rubber being present in the blend in an amount of 5 to 95 weight per cent. The rubber may be natural rubber, polybutadiene, particularly cis-polybutadiene, butadiene/styrene or butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer, polybutene, ethylene/α-olefin copolymer, polyisoprene or polychloroprene. The olefin polymer may be derived from ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 4- methylpentene-1 and/or hexane, optionally with not more than 10 weight per cent of a multiply unsaturated monomer such as butadiene. The compositions may also comprise fillers, and may be cured with dicumyl peroxide or sulphur, or by irradiation. Examples describe onepiece golf balls moulded from compositions comprising cis polybutadiene, lead carbonate, titanium dioxide, yellow pigment, dicumyl peroxide and (I) an ethylene/butene-1 /butadiene copolymer, (II) polyethylene and (HI) an ethylene/butene-1 copolymer; and composites having cores moulded from (IV) composition (I) and (V) composition (II) surrounded by cover shells of a composition comprising an ethylene/ methacrylic acid/sodium methacrylate copolymer, cis-polybutadiene, lead carbonate, titanium dioxide, yellow pigment and dicumyl peroxide.
