Abstract
1,176,172. Drawing. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 27 Sept., 1967 [28 Sept., 1966; 15 Aug., 1967], Nos. 43267/66 and 37392/67. Heading B3P. Metal to be drawn through a die 3 is passed through a tubular seal 4 and a lubricant pressure vessel 1, into which lubricant is pumped at least during the initial period of the drawing operation, so that lubricant is drawn into the vessel 1 from a pre-lubrication bath 12 to generate a lubricant pressure within the vessel 1 at least equal to a major proportion of the tensile strength of the metal. When sufficient pressure has been generated, the pump supplying lubricant through an inlet 6 may be switched off. The clearance between the seal 4 and the metal is 0À001-0À004 inch. The lubricant, e.g. mineral oil, glycerol, polyglycol, may be heated prior to being pumped to the vessel 1. A cooling coil 5 may be provided adjacent the tubular seal 4, which may be of tungsten carbide having a bore of constant cross-section of one inch length.
