Abstract

1,169,782. Polyamide/polyester conjugate filaments. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 Feb., 1969 [24 Feb., 1966], No. 8167/66. Heading B5B. A drawn molecularly oriented spontaneously crimping conjugate filament contains at least two components one of which is a fibre-forming polyamide or polyester and the other of which is a fibre-forming polyamide/polyester mixture. In the latter component one constituent, the minor constituent, is dispersed in a matrix of the other, said minor constituent being a polyester or a polyamide when the other component of the conjugate filament is a polyamide or a polyester when said other component is a polyester. The term " conjugate filament " is defined as a unitary filament consisting of at least two polymeric fibre-forming components extending continuously along the length thereof in an adhering sheath/core or side-by-side relationship. The polyamide/polyester mixture may contain not less than 25% by weight of the disperse phase. One component of the filament may be a polyamide and the other component may be a polyamide/polyester mixture in which the polyamide is the continuous phase and the polyester is dispersed therein in the form of fibrils having a length of not less than 80 microns. The polyamide may be polyhexamethylene adipamide and the polyamide/polyester mixture may be polyhexamethylene adipamide/polyethylene terephthalate. The filaments may be manufactured by simultaneously extruding the molten components through the same extrusion orifice, solidifying by cooling the molten filament thereby formed, winding up the solidified filament on to a package and storing the package at a relative humidity of at least 65% and a temperature of 71-73‹ F. before drawing or drawing immediately after completion of winding, drawing the filament at a draw ratio of at least 3 and relaxing to allow the crimp to develop. The filament may be heated during drawing by passing it over a hot plate or round a heated snubbing pin, the temperature of the plate or pin being at least 100‹ C.
