Abstract

1,169,273. Inflating buoys. M. L. AVIATION CO. Ltd. 9 April, 1968 [9 March, 1967], No. 11197/67. Headings B7A and B7S. [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for inflating and releasing an inflatable buoy from a submerged vessel 1 includes a tubular part 4 defining at least a part of a water-tight enclosure 5 in which to stow the buoy, and having an opening through which the buoy can be released normally closed by a locked cover 6, a normal shut valve 38 sealing off the enclosure from the exterior, a cartridge holder 13, a piston 27 located in a cylinder into which ignition products resulting from ignition of a cartridge in the holder pass, the piston 27 controlling a second valve 28 located in a passage extending between a connection 10 to a source 9 of high pressure gas and a connection 23 for the buoy in the enclosure 5, and mechanism which in response to the effect of the ignition products causes the valve 38 to flood the enclosure 5 and also unlocks and tends to eject the cover 6. The ignition products also move the piston 27 in a direction to pierce diaphragm 26 for the high pressure gas to act in opposition to the ignition products, in which position the piston remains until the enclosure has flooded sufficiently for the mechanism to eject the cover 6, whereupon the consequent reduction in pressure of the ignition products results in movement of piston 27 under the influence of the high pressure gas in source 9, which movement opens the valve 28 permitting the high pressure gas to flow through connection 23 to inflate the buoy which moves outwardly through the opening. The buoy may be used to raise the submerged vessel or to act as a marker.
