Abstract
1,168,709. Variable-ratio gears. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. 14 Aug., 1967 [6 Sept., 1966], No. 37316/67. Heading F2D. A multi-countershaft transmission has means ensuring equal flow of power through each countershaft. An input gear 42 floats radially with respect to an input shaft 41, and meshes gears 47, 62 on countershafts 46, 61. Gears 48-52 fast on countershaft 46 and gears 63-66 fast on countershaft 61 mesh gears 78, 83, 87, 91 which are selectably clutchable to an output shaft 72, and countershaft gears 53, 67 drive an output gear 94 through reversing idlers. The gears 78, 83, 87, 91, 94 are rotatably supported on the output shaft by bushings so as to be held against any appreciable movement with respect to its axis. The clearance between the teeth of each output gear and the countershaft gears associated therewith is made greater than is usual, and sufficiently great to permit the countershaft gears of each unclutched set to respond to the relative positions with respect to each other of the countershaft gears in a clutched gear set without binding against the respective output gears of each unclutched set, so that all the output gears which are unclutched at a given time will be free from binding against any of the countershaft gears regardless of which gear set is clutched at this time. The input gear is mounted on the input shaft by way of a sleeve 146 having short internal and external splines at the opposite axial ends thereof to permit radial movement as described in Specification 1,163,774.
