Abstract

A packaging machine of the kind comprising a pocketed drum for forming recesses in a thermoplastic web together with sealing and counter rollers for applying a cover web, and means for punching out completed packages, is characterized in that the drum is in two or more coaxial sections of equal or differing diameters which may have dissimilar recesses. In one arrangement, a thermoplastic web 16 is fed beneath heaters 26, 27 on to one of a pair of drum sections 23 where pockets 32 are vacuum formed by recesses 14. Compressed air may be applied to the recesses to assist release of the pockets. After filling the pockets 32 with e.g. tablets at the station 20, the web 16 is combined with a cover web 18 between a heated sealing roller 6 and recessed counter roller 8, the webs moving on over compensating rollers 22, 23 and a guide roller 7 to a punching device 24. The packages 30 so formed are removed via the shoot 25 to a container or packing machine (not shown). The drum sections and rollers are movable axially on their shafts to change over from one drum section to the other. In a further embodiment, two sections as above may operate simultaneously, Fig. 5 (not shown). The drum may be in three sections having different diameters, Fig. 4 (not shown). The drum sections may be magnetically and/or mechanically disconnectible for independent rotation and may be vertically adjustable. The recesses may be formed using compressed air.
