Abstract
1,164,090. Crust-breaking apparatus. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. 14 March, 1968 [7 April, 1967], No. 12501/68. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] A furnace for producing aluminium by fusion electrolysis, e.g. of alumina in cryolite, is provided with at least one mechanically driven tool which includes at least one gas duct located therein, e.g. four blowing chisels 1, arranged to be lowered, e.g. on a beam 28 by two vertically adjustable pressure cylinders 27 mounted on brackets 26 on pillars 25, to pierce the surface crust 21 of the electrolyte 20 and supply gas to the electrolyte to eliminate the anode effect. As shown, the blowing chisels 1 are connected to a main gas line 29 by feed pipes 7 to blow gas through ducts, e.g. bores or orifices 8 into the electrolyte under the prebaked or self-baking anodes 23; the ducts may be directed radially horizontally or obliquely. The furnace may be fed periodically, independently of the anode effects, with alumina 22 lying on the crust by piercing without supplying gas. The tool may be assembled from preformed parts and equipped with lateral wings (Figs. 3 to 5).
