Abstract
1,162,322. Casting processes. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 4 March, 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 14824/67. Addition to 1,132,361. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C3] Metal is cast into a block or piece mould containing or surrounded by particulate active C undergoing combustion. The metal may be cast after combustion of C has proceeded long enough for air to be purged from the permeable mould material. The C may be disposed in one or more sealed cavities within the mould, or the mould-body may be sealed into a jacket of vapour-impermeable material, e.g. mild steel, containing the C. The temperature of the mould when brought into association with the C is preferably 750 C., and the metal is preferably cast before the mould temperature drops below 500 C. The C particle size range is preferably 30+150 B.S.S. mesh, and has specific surface area 500 m.<SP>2</SP>g<SP>-1</SP>. The mould may be made by the lost wax process from a slurry of hydrolysed ethyl silicate or silica aquasol and coarse refractory aggregate, e.g. with grading distribution - 30 + 80 mesh 65%, and - 200 mesh, 35%. The mould is dried and then fired, e.g. at 950-1100 C. The metal is normally cast more or less immediately the mould is removed from the firing furnace. If cavities for C are to be provided, fusible patterns for these are placed on a base-plate with the main mould pattern. The metal may be high-chromium steel, or lowcarbon, high-alloy tool steel, or ferritic or martensitic stainless steel. Decarburization of the metal surface is reduced or avoided.
