Abstract
1,162,226. Making caps; metal strip feeds. L'ALUMINIUM FRANCAIS. 19 Sept., 1966 [22 Sept., 1965], No. 41768/66. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3W. An apparatus for making caps comprises a metal strip feed unit 1 with a pair of opposed feed rolls 11, 12, a pair of switches 15, 16 which are activated by the loop of strip material 91 to control the operation of the motor 14 for the rolls 11, 12, a fixed gripper 21, 22 which cooperates with a reciprocable gripper 23, 24 to feed the strip intermittently to a cutting and stamping punch 3 after which the blanks are fed to a final shaping die 5. The strip 90 is fed past a lubricator 10 by the feed rolls 11, 12, at least one of which is driven from the motor 14. Since the strip is moved by the grippers 21-24 intermittently a loop 91 is formed in the strip after the feed rolls. The upper switch 15 is closed when the strip touches a sensing member 151 and energizes a coil 174 to start the motor 14. When excess of strip is in the loop the strip touches a sensing member 161 resulting in the motor 14 being switched off. The strip is fed from the loop to the stamping unit 3 by the grippers 21-24. The gripper 21, 22 comprises a fixed electromagnet 21 and a magnetic mass 22 whereas the gripper 23, 24 comprises a movable electromagnet 23 and a magnetic mass 24. The grippers 21-24 co-operate to feed the strip, the movable gripper 23, 24 being activated by a solenoid 26 which is energized by a switch 33 on the stamping unit. The stamping unit preferably comprises a punch 31 and a die 32 with an annular cutter 311 and an annular recess 321 respectively to cut out and shape the blank. The blanks are fed to a storage hopper 42 which has a vibrating plate 421 and a discharge tube 423. The tube 423 has one or more cones 422 which allow the caps which are correctly aligned, i.e. rim uppermost, to pass by to the finishing punch 5. Any caps which pass by the cones and are misaligned are ejected through an aperture 431. The punching unit 5 is preferably of the type described in Specification 1,122,197 and comprises two punches 51, 52 which grip the flat portion of the cap while a cylindrical part 53 co-operates with an annular punch 54 to shape the cap and roll the rim (973), Fig. 5 (not shown), inwards. The formed cap is fed to a rotating plate 61 whereon the interior of the cap has pasty material applied to it by a needle 62, as the table rotates. The cap is then fed to a furnace 7 wherein the pasty material is remelted.
