Abstract
1,160,077. Nitrophenols. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 31 Oct., 1966, No. 48664/66. Heading C2C. Nitrophenols are produced by the hydrolysis of a halonitro aromatic compound with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide followed by acidification of the resulting alkali metal nitro phenolate, characterized in that the hydrolysis is carried out with the reaction mixture in intimate contact with a mild oxidizing agent capable of functioning as an oxidizing agent in an alkaline reaction medium. Suitable oxidizing agents are air, oxygen-containing gases, hydrogen peroxide, other inorganic peroxides and hydroperoxides, organic peroxides and hydroperoxides. The examples describe the preparation of p-nitrophenol.
