Abstract

1,158,844. Sheet delivering apparatus. E. C. H. WILL. 17 Aug., 1966 [28 Aug., 1965], No. 36903/66. Heading B8R. Sheets delivered from a cross-cutting machine (not shown), by a pair of superposed endless belts 30, 31 travelling at a high speed are retarded and overlapped before stacking by a retarding endless belt 10 which travels at a reduced speed and co-operates with a rotary segment 12 acting on the trailing edge of the sheets 20 as they are delivered by the endless belts 30, 31, the rotary segment 12 being driven in synchronism with the cross-cutting machine so as to facilitate delivery of sheets of varying lengths. In one embodiment the rotary segment 12, which is journalled on shaft 13 and driven by belts 18 and pulley 19, is provided with endless belts 17 which are trained over an independently driven pulley 16 and rollers 14, 15 co-operating with the retarding belt 10 and underlying rollers 21, 22 to engage the trailing edge of the sheets 20 and reduce their speed to that of the retarding belt. Overlapping of sheets is assisted by a jet nozzle 25 which presses the following sheets against the lower run of an endless belt 31 to prevent the leading edges of following sheets from fouling the trailing edges of preceding sheets. In another embodiment the segment 12 is replaced by a segment 12<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 6) which supports at its distal end a freely rotatable roller 17<SP>1</SP>.
