1,158,076. Polyamine polymers. NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP. 2 Aug., 1967 [12 Aug., 1966], No. 35533/67. Heading C3R. Polyamine polymers containing units of formula -R<SP>4</SP>N[(CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>) n- NR<SP>3</SP>] m X.Z. X.NR<SP>4</SP>- [(CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>) n . NR<SP>3</SP>] m -where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are hydrogen atoms or alkyl or cycloalkyl radicals, n is from 2 to 30, m is from 1 to 1,000, X is a moiety derived from an aldehyde, Z is a ketone moiety or a phenol moiety and R is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or alkoxy radical, are obtained by reacting at a pH below 7 (1) a polyamine of formula R<SP>4</SP>HN[(CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>) n ,NR<SP>3</SP>] m H, (2) an aldehyde, and (3) a ketone or a phenol. In examples polymers are obtained from (1) tetraethylenepentamine, a polyethylene amine residue obtained from the reaction between ethylene dichloride and ammonia, a mixture containing hexamethylene diamine, bis-hexamethylene triamine and higher homologues, and a mixture containing pentaethylenehexamine, diaminoethyl triaminoethylamine, diaminoethyl triethylenetetramine, aminoethyl piperazine and higher homologues, (2) formaldehyde, glyoxal and benzaldehyde, and (3) acetone, phenol and cyclohexanone.
