Abstract

1,157,974. Synthetic resin electrocoating composition. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 14 Sept., 1966 [8 Oct., 1965], No. 41120/66. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C7] An object is electrophoretically coated in an electrophoresis bath comprising a thermosetting resin dissolved or dispersed in water and a thermoplastic plastics powder which is insoluble in the solution or dispersion and which is dispersed therein. The plastics powder may be a polyolefin, a cellulose-ester, a polyurethane, a polyamide, a polystyrene, a polyether, a halogenated plastics material and/or a copolymerization product or mixture of two or more of said plastics materials; may have a grain-size of 0À1-100 Á and may contain 0À5-5% by weight of pigment, e.g. by homogeneous pigmentation prior to polymerization. The pigment used may be titanium dioxide or iron oxide. As the thermosetting resin, which may be pigmented or unpigmented, a phenolic resin, an alkyd resin, a melamine resin, an epoxy resin, a resin based on trimellitic acid or a mixture of two or more of said resins, may be used. The bath may also contain an organic solvent, e.g. alcohol, wetting agent or emulsifier. The bath may be diluted with demineralized water to give a solids content of 8-20% by weight. Examples are given of baths comprising pulverized polyundecamide containing titanium dioxide as a pigment, a vinyl-modified water-soluble phenolic resin and methanol; powdered polyethylene containing iron oxide as a pigment, a vinyl-modified acrylic resin and isopropanol; and powdered polystyrene and alkyd-melamine resin.
