Abstract
1,156,450. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 15 Feb., 1968, No. 7510/68. Heading H4A. A leaky waveguide aerial comprises a rectangular waveguide 1, Fig. 1, with an offcentred longitudinal slot 3 in one wall, and with a conductive transverse periodic partition structure inside. Said structure has a periodicity which is less than the width of the slotted wall, and it extends towards the slotted wall from the opposite wall, and partly up the side walls, forming a set of identical compartments above which there is a clear space. As described, the waveguide is dimensioned for the dominant mode, and the structure consists of equally spaced webs 4. The waveguide may be excited by a probe (Fig. 5, not shown) which is situated a quarter of a guided wavelength from a shotcircuiting backplate, the far end of the waveguide being terminated by a matching load. The slot may be weather-proofed by a thin sheet of dielectric material. For use at frequencies such as 110 Mc/s. the walls and webs of the aerial may be made of mesh material. It is stated that the aerial provides a main beam of low elevation angle and is suitable, for example, for an airfield instrument landing system.
