Abstract

1,155,037. Tetracycline antibiotic salts. C. F. VOZQUEZ. 8 July, 1966 [8 July, 1965], No. 30878/66. Heading C2A. The invention comprises a salt of a tetracycline antibiotic with an alkyl or alkenyl acid ester wherein the alkyl or alkenyl group contains from 14 to 18 carbon atoms. The compounds are prepared by reacting a tetracycline antibiotic or a salt thereof, with the appropriate acid ester or salt thereof. The acid ester may be the acid sulphate, acid tartrate, acid succinate or acid maleate, e.g. sodium cetyl sulphate or sodium stearyl sulphate. The tetracycline may be tetracycline, 5-oxytetracycline 7-chlorotetracycline, 6-dimethyl-7-chlortetracycline, N- [4 - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - 1 - piperazinyl] - methyl tetracycline, N-(pyrrolidinomethyl) tetracycline or N-(L-lysinomethyl) tetracycline. Typical salts are tetracycline cetyl sulphate, tetracycline stearyl sulphate and N-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1- piperazinyl] methyl tetracycline bis-(cetylsulphate). The salts are insoluble in water, soluble in hydroxylated solvents such as aliphatic alcohols and glycols and very stable. A pharmaceutical composition comprises a tetracycline antibiotic salt as above andacarrier, e.g. a glycol or vegetable oil.
