Abstract
1,154,731. Extruding; upsetting; making waveguides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 2 June, 1966 [4 June, 1965], No. 24536/66. Headings B3A, B3H and B3P. A workpiece 24 is shaped at least at its end by pressure sufficient to produce plastic flow. In the production of a waveguide, a flange 70 is formed on the end of a metal tube 24 by disposing it around a mandrel 16 attached to a ram 14 in a chamber 12 filled with hydraulic fluid, and moving the ram downward to apply hydrostatic pressure 64, 72 to the workpiece and extrude it through a die orifice 22 into a die cavity. The latter is formed by an annular member 46 and a back-up die 38 supported by hydraulic fluid 34. A bore 44 is provided to guide the mandrel. During extrusion and upsetting of the flange the back-up die 38 moves downwardly expelling fluid through relief valve 62. The die orifice may be provided in a separate extrusion die disposed at the bottom of chamber 12. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the back-up die (80) is supported on a spherical seating. The flange may be of round or rectangular shape.
