A tiltable lifting spreader for containers comprises frames 2, 3, interconnected by non- parallel pivoted links 4, 5 and a ram 6, 7. Thus, when the ram is extended or retracted the frame 2 is inclined relative to the frame 3. So that the frame 2 may be displaced longitudinally, the links 4. 5 are pivoted to a carriage 8 with wheels 9 which run on rails 10 on the frame 2.
