Abstract
1,148,662. Chromatographic process using. expanding bed of particles. V. PRETORIOUS and H. H. HAHN. 9 May, 1966 [11 May, 1965], No. 34033/68. Divided out of 1,148,661. Headings B1L and B1X. A chromatographic separation is carried out with the retarding phase present as a layer on or the surface of the particles of a bed of a particulate packing material and the bed maintained in an expanded state by the turbulent flow of the forwarding phase therethrough. The separation preferably takes place in an upright tubular column 11 which contains the expandable bed on a support 13. An outlet 23 for the forwarding phase has means for preventing the escape of expanded bed. The column may be subdivided by means 29 with a plurality of such columns connected in series by booster pump means 28. The bed may be free flowing and may be withdrawn through adjustable outlet 16 (Fig. 2) for recirculation after stripping with a medium introduced through lower inlet and withdrawn through outlet 24. The forwarding phase may be liquid or gas.
