Abstract

1,147,981. Levels. WILLIAM MARPLES & SONS Ltd. May 13, 1966 [May 21, 1965], No. 21702/ 65. Heading G1F. A spirit level comprises a body (not shown) containing a number of level units 10 each in the form of a transparent rectangular block of plastics material 12 having an elongated spirit and bubble containing depression 14 formed therein, the depression being blanked off by means of a closure member 24. The bottom of the depression is curved to conform to the curvature usual with conventional spirit levels, and the closure member 24 may be transparent or opaque and provided with a curved outer surface 30 to facilitate adjustment when two units are mounted back-to-back. Two parallel grooves 22 are formed in the depression 14 to serve as sight lines in the finished unit. The units may suitably be mounted in pairs back-toback in windows in the spirit level body, which is preferably in the form of an aluminium, I section beam with decorative wood facings disposed on both sides of the central web. The level units may be held in place by pairs of apertured clamping plates disposed one on each side of the level body, one level unit of the pair being rigidly connected, by pins to one plate, and the other level unit to the other plate, so that the two units may be independently adjusted during manufacture and then clamped in place by screws holding the plates.
