Abstract

1,147,961. Tunnelling machine-guidance systems. HUGHES TOOL CO. 3 April, 1967, No. 15081/67. Heading E1F. Guidance system for an earth-excavating machine, e.g. a tunneling machine, comprises a signal beam-generating source 14 that can be caused to project a beam parallel to the required direction of advance of the machine to impinge on a pair of targets 15, 16, e.g. photo-electric cell clusters, mounted on the machine on an alignment parallel with the longitudinal axis of the machine and connected to an indicator means 11 at the control station 7 of the machine to transmit to the indicator means signals appropriate to the impingement of the beam on the targets. The signals cause to be depicted on the indicator means the relationship between the beam and the targets so that action can be taken if necessary to maintain the advance of the machine in the required direction.
