Abstract

1,146,820. Measuring magnetic fields. MULLARD Ltd. March 1, 1968, No.10105/68. Heading G1N. Apparatus for sensing perturbations in a weak magnetic field comprises a pair of rigidly connected spaced apart superconducting rings R 1 , R 2 , each ring comprising a pair of insulating barriers (Josephson junctions) J 1 , J 2 , the maximum tunnelling current through which varies as a periodic function of magnetic field strength. Terminals 1, 2 are connected to a D.C. or low frequency A.C. source and the voltage across resistor 3 is taken as the output from each ring and fed to a differential amplifier DA whereby, when the rings are displaced or rotated through a small angle about the centre of line RC, the number of minima (or maxima) in the output 6 is a function of the difference in the magnetic field strengths at the rings. The effective sharpness of the minima may be increased by arranging that the tunnelling maximum supercurrent be just exceeded, keeping the voltage constant, and counting the actual current minima. Two pairs of rings may be arranged with their lines RC at right angles, Fig. 5 (not shown). The output of one of the rings may be observed separately. Non- magnetic conductive shielding may enclose the apparatus. The rings should be of equal area or compensation circuits may be used.
