Abstract
1,145,791. Electrolytic production of protective coatings. BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP. April 19, 1966 [March 7, 1966], No. 17062/66. Heading C7B. A corrosion resistant coating, comprising hydrated chromic oxides, chromium phosphate and elemental chromium, is applied to a ferrous article, such as steel strip with or without an electro-plated chromium coating, by immersing the article in an aqueous electrolyte containing at least 50/gl CrO 3 and containing H 3 PO 4 e.g. 17 to 150g/l, the ratio of CrO 3 ; H 3 PO 4 being 1À7 to 3, electrolyzing the article anodically for at least 0À15 sec, then cathodically for at least 0À15 sec, using a current density of at least 200 ASF, and rinsing. The coated article is suitable to receive a coating of enamel, paint or resin. Prior to coating, the ferrous article may be cleaned cathodically in alkaline solution. Lead, lead alloy or platinum electrodes may be used for the electrolysis. Steel strip 40 may be continuously coated by passing it between first cathodes 45 then anodes 46 in the above electrolyte 42 as shown in Fig. 2.
