Abstract

1,145,469. Cooling travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 24 Aug., 1967, No. 39053/67. Heading H1D. [Also in Division E2] A cooler for a conoidal collector electrode of a travelling-wave tube includes a plurality of cooling fins 13, each of which surrounds the collector and is supported by rods 4 passing, with clearance, through holes in the fins, each fin having a central flange 16 shaped to fit around a respective axial region of the collector, and a set of springs 12 urging the fins axially towards the end of the cooler through which the collector is inserted. As shown, the rods are held in a centring member 2, adjustable by screws within the tube mounting 3, which includes a permanent magnet focusing system. The collector end of the tube is inserted through, and held by, an 0-ring 6, the collector forcing the fins back against the action of the spring 12, the opposite ends of which abut against flanges 11 formed at the further end of each of the sleeves 10, such that the tapered flanges 16 make good thermal contact with appropriate regions of the collector (Fig. 4, not shown). The arrangement permits tilting of the tube with respect to the cooler for adjustment of the focusing of the electron beam.
